Manchester United were beaten 7-6 on penalties by neighbours Manchester City in Saturday's Community Shield showdown at Wembley.
United made the dream start to the shootout, scoring their first penalty through Bruno Fernandes before Onana denied Bernardo, but Jadon Sancho and Jonny Evans then fluffed their lines, opening the door for City to bag the first trophy of the season. However, Pellistri knew instantly that Fernandes' celebrations were going to be cut short, pausing his warm-up on the touchline to put his hands around the back of his neck, recognising that it would not count.
Garnacho had made a terrific burst to lay the ball on a plate for Rashford, who looked destined to score. However, he skewed his effort. However, United assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy, who knows what it feels like to miss the target when expected to score, came to the edge of the pitch and applauded for a few seconds in a show of encouragement for Rashford. His thinking was to clearly try and support Rashford, who will be itching to get back among the goals on a consistent basis this season.
