I have served the UK as a British Army wife for decades, but the treatment of EU nationals has changed my view of this country

Many years ago, on a girls’ night out, I met the man who would become my soulmate, then a young soldier serving in Germany as part of theMarrying him meant marrying the army too, so I left my home, family and friends and gave up my job to move to England with him.

Personally, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of betrayal by the country I have called home for so many years.I have always been a proud military wife and feel that by supporting my husband in his service, I too have done my bit for Queen and Country.Whenever my husband was posted to a new location, our two daughters and I followed him. In total, we have moved 13 times; stationed in garrisons all over the UK, and overseas on assignments in Germany and Cyprus.

My husband was also deployed on various tours to Iraq and Afghanistan, so when he was away, I ‘held the fort’ at home. After the initial shock, panic and anxiety set in as we tried to find out what Brexit would mean for me and my rights as an EU citizen.
