As a kid, I don't think I knew anyone my age who hadn't visited this rite of passage
Growing up in the 90s and 00s Edge Lane Cineworld was at the heart of so many memories. The site first opened in August 1991 as a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer eight-screen cinema, with Terminator Two and Pump Up The Volume being among the first films to be screened there. By 1995, the cinema had been renamed Virgin and later UGC in 1999.
I remember the first time I was allowed to go there alone and I meticulously planned out the route to get there from Wavertree Technology Park station. Now in my late 20s, I'm slightly embarrassed to admit that a standout memory was seeing the first Twilight film there - and rushing home to download Muse's Supermassive Black Hole to listen to on repeat on my purple iPod Nano.
Back in 2016, before its closure, Leslie Green captured some of the final moments inside Edge Lane Cineworld. Uploaded to her Flickr account, they're bound to stir memories for the thousands across Liverpool who once went there. Seeing this made me age at a rapid pace because I cannot believe these films are now almost a decade old. In the main foyer came the kiosk, where you could buy popcorn, nachos, drinks and other snacks before entering one of the film screens.
In April 2016, cinema-goers heard that Liverpool’s Edge Lane cinema was to close in three months. At the time, Cineworld said they were being removed from its retail park building when the lease came to an end and broke the news to registered cinema members via email. By July 2016, the credits were rolling for Edge Lane Cineworld - and filmgoers were gutted. The closure left Liverpool without a Cineworld for the first time in 25 years, though a new one was planned for Speke in late 2018.
