Whether you call it vintage, second-hand, car boot, charity shop or even thrifting, there is a strong market for sustainable shopping in Greater Manchester. Alongside the string of charity shops adorning every town centre, we are spoiled for choice by independent mainstays like Cow, Pop Boutique, Stockport’s Vintage Emporium, Blue Rinse, the aptly named Thrift Shop on Piccadilly Gardens, and of course Afflecks.
I’ll start off by saying that – if the 10,000 sq ft part didn’t give it away – the store is enormous. Featuring men’s and women’s fashion, furniture, homewares, toiletries and snacks, plus books, music, DVDs, toys and even a café on the second floor, it’s not an exaggeration to say that you could quite comfortably live inside it.
Above the logo was a tagline that could give some clue to the item’s age: “Designed by Marilyn Anselm.” A quick Google search revealed that Anselm was the brain behind Hobbs; a graduate of the Central School of Art, she set up the brand in 1981 and ran it with her husband Yoram until they sold it in 2002. This would suggest that this skirt, which looks practically brand new, is at least over 20 years old.
Following on from the coup I have just pulled off at the skirt rack, I hover towards the back of the store, my new find draped lovingly over my arm. On a shelf between the homeware and accessories sections, nestled among the hand soaps, purses and novelty mugs, is a small tray holding an assortment of glass bottles, which turn out on closer inspection to be perfumes.
Any high street retailer can cobble together a sweet-smelling spray in a generic looking bottle, and while many have a decent offering, including some dupes of designer favourites, Zara is head and shoulders above the rest. As well as its sell-out collaboration with Jo Malone at an affordable price, its range is known for its sheer variety: five different variations on an amber fragrance, four for cherry, three for vanilla.
