Many visitors offset costs on motorhome road trips – this is a country dominated by the car, with less than 5 per cent of household journeys made by public transport between 2020 and 2023, according to the ministry of transport. In its most recent survey, 70 per cent of respondents said they had not used public transport at all in 2023.
InterCity has a range of tourist-friendly, multi-journey passes, costing between NZ$159 to cross North Island and NZ$669 for a loop around South Island. They are economical for longer stays and deeper exploration. The bus was comfortable with plenty of luggage space, free Wi-Fi and more legroom than on some long-haul flights I’ve been on. What surprised me most, however, was the drivers’ depth of knowledge, offering commentary.
