Sentia Red, which hit bars two years ago, is intended to mimic the effect of alcohol by stimulating the neurotransmitter in the brain that calms it down. This is known as the GABA system, which is the same one Valium targets. Three Spirits, which was founded in London in 2018, also uses herbs that enhance GABA in the brain such as passionflower and lemon balm with the tagline: “blended by plant scientists and bartenders”.

Susie Goldspink, head of no- and low-alcohol at IWSR Drinks Market Analysis, said: “Product messaging [from companies is] shifting from the absence of alcohol to flavour and other benefits.
