In recent years, there’s no denying the emergence of street food halls has delivered a major boost to towns and cities across the country.
Built in 1775 as a place of trade for Leeds’ cloth merchants and now Grade-II* listed the iconic White Cloth Hall was once one of the north’s vitally important market places and now it is well on its way to cementing its place as one of the city’s most exciting new food and drink openings. Like many of its contemporaries, ordering at White Cloth Hall can be done at your table through your phone. Despite it being busy during our visit, something I’m reliably informed is a regular occurrence, drinks arrived promptly with our mix-and-match food selection coming across a period of 10 to 20 minutes. A decent turnaround given the venue was clearly pushing capacity.
As mentioned earlier, this high-level food hall concept certainly isn’t new but there’s something rather special at White Cloth Hall and its offering. As a Mancunian, a reference point would be Mackie Mayor, based in my home city’s Northern Quarter.
