Jarred Martin was six years older, 30kg heavier and playing Under-20s for Canberra when he returned home to country Temora and taught his kid brother how to tackle.
Queensland forward J’Maine Hopgood has been battling sciatica pain since Origin I because of a bulging disc in his back pinching a nerve.Martin’s bone-crunching tackle on his good friend Hopgood in Sydney was one of the few highlights in defeat for the Blues.
“He is one of the best defenders in the comp when it comes to producing those strong tackles. He’s a maniac on the field and a maniac off it. I don’t wish him any luck on Wednesday, but I’ll enjoy watching him.”Liam said he was about 14 when Jarred, then playing with the Canberra Raiders’ under-20s team which included Josh Papalii and Jack Wighton, returned home to Temora and introduced him to a variety of tackling and wrestling techniques.
“When he came back from Canberra in the 20s, he showed me wrestling techniques. I gave away about 30kg to him, and he was there rissolling me, getting me with the ‘double unders’ .Martin said he still thinks about his brother and wants to make him proud, especially when it comes to big games like Origin.Several current and former players did their best to try and explain what made Martin so lethal on the other side of the ball.
“It’s all about getting your feet into good position,” Gillmeister said. “He knows how to use his body because his feet are in the right position, and his timing is impeccable.”Penrith defensive coach Peter Wallace said Martin was much better at knowing when to race out of the line, and when to dip late into tackles.
