But Hill Sixteen’s distressing demise might be recorded for posterity as something more than a statistic, the 16th horse to have lost its life in the Grand National since 2000, and Their infiltration of the Aintree course was certainly effective in forcing people to consider the ethical basis of the Grand National. The proponents of horseracing fulminated, pointing out recent safety improvements, calling the protestors “attention-seekers” . But, either on purpose or not, they didn’t get the point.
