The former Labour stronghold in Lancashire has delivered a warning to Sir Keir Starmer ahead of today's local council elections
Blackburn , once regarded as one of Labour’s safest northern strongholds, is showing growing signs of political frustration as residents speak openly about the cost of living crisis, immigration concerns and a feeling that promises from Westminster have failed to deliver real change.
The East Lancashire town, long associated with Labour loyalty and post-industrial decline, is now emerging as a warning sign for Sir Keir Starmer ahead of today's local elections , with some lifelong supporters saying they no longer feel represented by the party. One resident said she had voted Labour her entire life but would not be backing the party this time. She said: 'This is the first time that Labour have let us down.
I’ve been a Labour voter all my life, but no, not this time.
' Another voter criticised the Labour leader directly, saying: 'I don’t really appreciate what he’s been doing recently with our country. He’s letting so many bad people into our towns and stuff and causing scenes, and it’s not really something that’s needed in Blackburn the way it already is.
' Blackburn has deep historic links to Labour, with political heavyweights including Jack Straw and Barbara Castle once representing the area or shaping its political identity. But for many residents struggling with rising bills and stagnant incomes, that history now offers little comfort. One pensioner said he felt punished despite working and paying taxes all his life. He said: “I have six pensions plus my old age pension, and they tax the whole lot.
I’d paid and worked hard all my life and paid my taxes, and now they’re draining me. ” Official figures show Blackburn remains one of the most deprived areas in the UK, with 43 per cent of children living in deprivation. Community groups say demand for support has surged as households continue to struggle with rising costs. Liz Crook, who runs community project Rummage Rescue, said families are facing severe hardship despite government support schemes, the Express reports.
She said: “They are really struggling. They are really, really struggling. There’s been lots of money coming from central government to support families in crisis, but it’s not enough. ” She described how residents queue for basic items handed out for free.
“We have a thing where we give free stuff outside and people queue for it. It’s stuff you would think nobody wants, but people queue up for it,” she said. Another resident described the service as “absolutely vital”, adding: “Cost of living is massive at the moment, isn’t it? ” They also issued a direct challenge to politicians, saying: “I’d invite them to come around and walk around here and come and meet some of the people in Blackburn.
Because it’s hard. ” The frustrations being voiced across Blackburn reflect wider questions facing Labour across former industrial areas where voters increasingly feel disconnected from Westminster politics . Industrial entrepreneur Patrick Grant, who runs local clothing manufacturer Cookson & Clegg, believes reviving British manufacturing could help rebuild towns like Blackburn. He said: “When you rip the heart out of places like Blackburn, you’ve got to put something back in.
” Grant argued that investing in domestic production would create jobs and strengthen local economies.
“If we made clothes here, they create loads of jobs that would prop up the economy in places like Blackburn,” he said. However, he warned the government lacked the mindset needed to properly support British industry.
“If they spent more, all of that money would come back into our economy,” he added. Despite hopes of regeneration, some younger residents admitted they had little faith in politics at all. One said: “They’re all fake to be honest. They all chat.
They’ll just say, ‘We’ll do this, we’ll do that,’ but they don’t do it after they win. ” As Blackburn mirrors wider frustrations across post-industrial Britain, Labour faces growing pressure to convince traditional supporters that promises of change will translate into real improvements in everyday life.
