Something about being a more mature mum seems to encourage well-meaning – and not so well-meaning – people to tell you how they see it, says mother-of-four Lorraine Candy, in an open letter to pregnant Kourtney Kardashian.
Also you most likely won’t be so worried about getting your pre-baby shape back at 44 as you were with the first baby; you know now that only a certain amount of body bounce back is possible. I hired a personal trainer the moment I got pregnant with my first daughter, I was fearful of losing a part of my identity tied up in my looks. I had no such worries at 43, my identity was in a more confident place.
Besides, you know you’re one of the lucky ones, at 44 you are more than aware of how many women are still trying to get pregnant in their forties, you see their pain and feel grateful for the unbelievable gift you’ve been given.
There are some great things about being pregnant in your forties though: you’ve learnt to ask for help , you’re usually in a financially more secure place, ditto your career. You know that baby inside you is not made of glass, but you’re wise enough to get all the checks medical experts offer without feeling as fearful of the outcome as you would have with baby number one.
You may feel slightly melancholy when you do the maths and work out you’ll be in your sixties when your child heads to uni instead of your late forties, but that’s no reason to worry because women today have become really vocal about ageing well, about staying healthier and happier for longer. The later-in-life motherhood role models are there for you, seek them out when you wonder how you’re going to cope with four children, a full-time job and a big opinionated family around you.
