High Force has a little 'brother', but it's only seen when its been raining heavily
What it lacks in height it more than makes up for in power. High Force in County Durham is believed to be England's largest waterfall by volume.
In high season thousands flock to see High Force, at the top of Upper Teesdale. Few, however, see its 'little brother' because of the sheer volume of rain required to push him over the north side of the cascade.By sheer luck, we visit after a night of almighty rain, proceeding weeks of unseasonably heavy rain. The sun is out today, the main waterfall is roaring with white water and even Mr Force's shy twin brother is playing out, albeit timidly in the form of a glorified trickle.
Even in dry conditions, High Force is quite something and to see it in full, um... force with the bonus of its little brother feels like a privilege.The north side of High Force is part of the Raby Estate whom you have to pay to see it. It's a pleasant eight-minute walk through woods to see the waterfall close-up from the bottom.
If you're in a wheelchair there is an accessible viewpoint although the steps will prevent you getting right up to the plunge pool.
