Muddy Stilettos says Woodborough is one of the best places to live in the entire county so we put that to the test
Finding the perfect place to call home is often an arduous task with plenty of potential pitfalls. Shortly after moving to a new flat in the middle of Nottingham's city centre, I was asked by my editor to go on an expedition - to find out why another part of Nottinghamshire was actually a much nicer place to live.
Calling the trip an expedition is possibly a slight exaggeration - the village is only seven miles away from Nottingham and is served by the 46 and 47 buses to and from the city. Getting off the bus, the air had a freshness, which you don't get if you swap lush fields and cottages for the busy roads and increasingly compact buildings of Nottingham.
You might think this isn't worthy of note - but in Nottingham city centre you don't usually get this sort of cheerfulness between strangers, so I thought I would soak it up. I joked with a dog walker as he tried to hush his disproportionately loud sausage dog and greeted a woman who had given me the slightest of jumps with a "good morning" from behind a hedge she was pruning.
If you want some peace and quiet you can listen to the birds sing from your cottage, converted farmhouse or sharp new build, sealed off from the outside world by a mossy stone barrier. But if you want to see friends for a drink or meal, as well as village pubs you can go to the elegant and intriguing Woodborough Hall - where they do a lovely afternoon tea.
