Chosen to follow Sir Alex Ferguson at Man United, David Moyes was facing an uphill challenge right from the very start at Old Trafford.
That was the size of the challenge awaiting David Moyes when he replaced Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in May 2013. He signed a six-year deal, officially starting work in M16 on July 1.
The last 11 years, not that it was ever a secret, have highlighted just how good a manager Ferguson was. He is the most successful British manager of all time and it is unlikely his success at United will ever be replicated. "When it's my time to retire, that'll always be my biggest regret. I found it really difficult when I lost the Manchester United job, there were so many stories that came out that were untrue – and I couldn't stop them.
But it wasn't for the want of trying. Moyes, as highlighted by the addition of Fellaini, wanted to strengthen in midfield, and Cesc Fabregas was one of his top targets. The former Arsenal captain was at Barcelona at the time and Moyes was determined to bring him back to the Premier League. "I spoke to Cesc and he'd been out of the team at Barcelona, so he agreed that if he wasn't in the team for their first game of the season then he’d come to United. He was going to be the big signing."
"The other player I wanted was Gareth Bale," Moyes continued. "United always had great wide players like David Beckham and Ryan Giggs, so I thought he would fit.
