'I was addicted to pro-anorexia websites and would encourage sick girls to lose weight'
FRANTICALLY typing into her keyboard, Peyton Hardy offered diet and weight loss tips to already incredibly thin girls.
She last visited the sites more than a year ago – but recently was horrified to discover they are still active.“I felt sick after I scrolled through post after post where I’d encouraged other young girls to starve themselves. I was racked with guilt and the untold damage I’d caused didn’t bear thinking about.”
But the situation worsened five years ago when she got her first phone – and realised she had constant access to search engines. While you can’t search for specific hashtags promoting anorexia, you can easily find posts encouraging it.One woman wrote: “Day 2 of fasting done! My dad bought pizza and it was SO hard to resist but I did it.”
"We strongly encourage social media platforms to do more to ensure such content cannot be posted, in the same way as they are now cracking down on images of self-harm.
