The Danish supermodel meets community leader Maribeth, whom she first met back in 2015.
Maribeth emphasises that she is not alone in these efforts. In fact, she thanks UNHCR, whose commitment to Colombia has not waned. Over the years, the organisation has focused on food security projects to improve livelihoods and spark hope. Maribeth recently completed a two-year training offered by UNHCR in urban agriculture. “The skills I acquired will always be useful to me,” she told me.
Bogotá is the new home of Maribeth and her children. Marilyn, Maribeth’s daughter, is about to finish high school, which will allow her to build a professional career. Marilyn is pursuing a technical degree, which she hopes will give her the opportunity to get a job. As for Maribeth’s son, he will undoubtedly become a famous football player. Maribeth’s eyes beamed with pride as she recounted the possibilities of the future.
“And for you, Maribeth, what does the future hold for you? What do you expect for yourself?” I asked her. Her gaze softened and she said: “I dream of living in a beautiful house, surrounded by trees, near the sea and close to my children. But, you know – well, I know – this is where I can help people, I’m useful here, so I have to stay. I am here as a community leader, to listen and to help.” Maribeth also expressed concern for refugees from Venezuela, as thousands of them have arrived in the city, and Maribeth wonders what she can do to help them.
I invite you to show support and solidarity, for Maribeth and for all the people who have been forcibly displaced in the world…
