It all got a little too much
I’ve read a lot about Matt Healy’s 'strange' antics in the news recently but I really wasn’t prepared for what was about to hit me during the first half of The 1975’s gig at Leeds’ First Direct Arena on Monday evening.
It can be unusual to see a band play every song of an album back to back but that’s exactly what they did. It meant there were some lesser-known hits mixed among songs that have received more radio airplay, such as Oh Caroline and I’m In Love With You. It was odd. It felt like I was watching a theatre production, or performance art, rather than a music gig, with Matt Healy front and centre. As we headed towards the switch to the ‘At Their Very Best’ part of the gig, the weirdness was ramped up to a whole new level as Matt Healy slowly unbuttoned his shirt and...touched himself provocatively.
TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME followed, with Matt giving the crowd a ticking off for chucking plastic cups on stage, before the likes of Chocolate, It's Not Living and Paris, with the latter chosen after he asked the crowd to choose between Menswear, Change of Heart, Medicine and Paris.
