It's the perfect place for a game of chess if you love car parks

It's not quite like a scene from the Queen's Gambit, the popular Netflix series where Russian chess players sit at outdoor tables in Moscow Park. The only similarity is that I'm wrapped in a warm winter coat and scarf against the chill.

I'm fully supportive of helping the next generation discover a love of the game. That said, I still have an underlying niggle that every available penny of government money should go towards repairing crumbling schools, the shortfall in social care and helping to fix an NHS on its knees. Why the powers that be who installed the table - Nottingham City Council - didn't choose Woodthorpe Park, or somewhere more attractive as a setting I do not know especially when it takes up valuable car parking spaces here.

Looking on the bright side, at least there's no bird poo. Another predicament - somewhat vital - there are no pieces. I thought they may be stored in a safe place - maybe the cycle lock-up or at a local shop or cafe but it appears you have to bring your own. However, Nottingham City Council, said the Sherwood table was installed at one of six new E-Mobility Hubs as part of works forming Future Transport Zones project. The Government has chosen four areas of the country to trial innovative and experimental schemes to encourage more active and sustainable transport. Nottingham and Derby's joint bid secured just under £17m.

Passer-by David Colyer said: "It's a good idea, anything to bring the community together. If it was in a park and there was a café, like in America, where they pay chequers and draughts, I can see that working. But in a car park? Who is going to bring their chess pieces? I think it's the wrong setting."
