“Who wants to live in this? Who wants to work in this?'
In a street in Govanhill bulging black bin bags dumped in alleyways are turning the air foul, while cardboard boxes are piled high on the side of the road and discarded children's shoes are scattered across the pavement.
The state of some of the tenement buildings in First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s Southside constituency is appalling and living conditions for many nothing short of deplorable, with stale smelling and damp closes a common theme on Alison Street. One resident told us he had tried to clean up the back yard and move all the fly-tipped waste into one place to make it nicer for people if they want to use it. But apart from the local shopkeepers, tradesmen carrying out odd jobs here and there, and a mum trying to settle a newborn baby in a dingy close, the whole place seemed pretty deserted.
Unfortunately that’s not the case on all streets, and in Govanhill it seems to be the exception. On West Moreland Street, behind an anti fly-tipping sign, sat a selection of children’s trainers which looked as though they had been thrown out of the window from one of the tenement buildings.
