Simon Cowell’s Britain’s Got Talent co-star insisted he was surprised by how others perceive the judge after working behind the scenes on the latest series
For many years, Simon Cowell was known as the no-nonsense talent show judge who wasn't afraid to say exactly what he thought. However, in recent years, fans and co-stars have suggested he has become softer - something he has attributed to stronger talent on shows such as Britain’s Got Talent, as well as becoming a father to his son Eric in 2014.
More recently, he has expressed regret over the way he treated Susan Boyle during the 2009 series, admitting his reaction to her was "horrible". One person who recently spoke of Simon’s persona is the show’s spin-off presenter Joe Baggs. The former Gogglebox star began fronting the new digital series earlier this year, joining semi-finalists for games and interviews, which are featured on the show's Instagram and TikTok pages.
Speaking to The i Paper, he said of his role: “I already feel like part of the family. ” He added of Simon: "Funnily enough, I thought everyone would be a bit scared of Simon Cowell, but he's so loved.
" While Simon may have softened his judging style in recent years, his long-time co-star Amanda Holden said she saw a glimpse of his old persona return during the 2026 auditions. Following his return to Blackpool after time off due to a fall, she recently said on Heart Radio Breakfast: “When he got back to Blackpool , he was as right as rain.
“He’s gone back to being really evil,” she joked, before adding playfully: “He had a French accent. ” “Last year he was really getting on my nerves because he was giving everyone second chances. I was like, ‘This is not Britain’s What’s Your Third Song Choice? This is Britain’s Got Talent - you’ve got two minutes to change your life and if it doesn’t work, come back next year’.
“And now he’s gone back to being sort of evil X Factor Simon, which is his trademark and what he should be doing. It’s much better, much quicker - brilliant,” she added. Amanda went on to say Simon’s injury had been “a huge benefit” for the show in terms of entertainment. She later told co-star Ashley Roberts: “Simon's gone back to being a baddie, which I'm really enjoying, I like it when he's evil.
” Tonight, eight more acts will perform live on the show in the hope of winning the public vote or receiving a golden buzzer for a slot in the final. Those taking to the stage are; Epic Sax Guy, Kristel Herrera, Rafferty Coope, Ren DMC, Sonny Green, Wei Yamin, Welsch Master Team and Glantaf Boys Choir. Britain’s Got Talent airs tonight at 6pm on ITV and ITVX.
