Orders were barked and bottoms smacked - but we just need respect and empathy
‘Respectful’ parenting is a better way to describe a movement of parents that simply want to be human
The key is simply repair after rupture. To apologise when I do get it wrong, and encourage them and hold them in doing the same. Unlike the parenting blueprint of the 80s where children were seen and not heard, orders were barked and bottoms were smacked, I don’t want to be pedestalled. I also think it’s down to openness. My parents tried to protect me from any arguments as a child by having them behind closed doors. But often as a kid I’d assume the worst if I ever overheard any short words between my folks. So I think there’s a kindness – perhaps even gentleness – in showing arguments openly and again how both of you repair.So I try – and I emphasise “try”, because time as a parent is not our friend – to take time to regulate myself and explain to them where the fault sits.
