The painting of the Joy Division frontman has been moved after it was suddenly painted over last year
An iconic mural of the late Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis is returning to Manchester a year after it was controversially painted over with an advertisement.
There was outrage last year after the former iconic wall mural, on Port Street in the Northern Quarter, was painted over with an advert for local rapper Aitch.The wall painting, on Port Street in the city centre, depicted a black and white portrait painting of the Stretford Joy Division frontman and was first unveiled back in 2020 before it was then whitewashed to make way for an ad for the then-latest album by Aitch.
The Manchester Evening News previously reported how planning documents revealed a location had been found for a new mural. Headstock, which describes itself as ‘the UK’s biggest music and mental wellbeing festival’, applied for planning permission to repaint the artwork on the side of the Star and Garter pub on Fairfield Street, near Piccadilly Station.
