She’s only just started, but has already made a record strictly for hardcore fans
Ice Spice knows how to stay cool. Two years ago the rapper from the Bronx otherwise known as Isis Gaston was an unknown preparing to release her first global hit, the innuendo-fuelled “Munch ”. She’s since done alright for herself, collaborating withand Nicki Minaj and getting together with PinkPantheress to conquer TikTok via sparkly smash, “Boy’s a Liar Pt 2”., the pressure on the 24-year-old to continue that winning streak is considerable.
Subject-wise, the record is one-note with a vengeance. The topic at hand is the pain of being a blockbusting rapper – with Ice Spice reminding the listener repeatedly that she’s the best newcomer around and that the competition can take a hike. “Talk a lot but ain’t sayin’ shit,” she tells her rivals on rumbling opener “Phatt Butt”. “I ain’t hear your song, they ain’t playing it.”
She continues in that vein on “Oh Shh…”, a hook-up with Travis Scott, where she slaps herself on the back as her guest chips in with his traditional AutoTune mumblings.Ice Spice smartly avoids explicit references to the furore involving The 1975 uber-prat Matty Healy, who chuckled along when two doltish podcasters made ham-fisted jokes about her ethnicity in 2023. It is a reminder that the best way to deal with idiots is to ignore them.
Still, a sprinkling of vulnerability wouldn’t have gone amiss. Tellingly, the album comes into its own on “Did It First”, a loved-up duet with London drill luminary Central Cee that is supercharged with chemistry and which chronicles a romance ripped apart by lovers’ inability to commit to one another.showcases Gaston’s rich, luxuriant voice and her megawatt charisma.
