Parts of the country are set to swelter through a severe heatwave while other regions will battle icy cold snow.

Sky News meteorologist Alison Osborne said southern Victoria and Tasmania will experience “rare” icy cold weather from Friday into the weekend.

And for the fourth time in 20 years, a few centimetres of snow will sprinkle over Australian alps in Victoria and the central plateau of Tasmania late Friday afternoon and Saturday.
