The reaction of a Tory whip to a man who complained he had been groped by the MP - to ask him if he is gay - is revelatory
She told the man: “Well, that doesn’t make it straightforward.”
Friends of Ms Dines are reported to claim she wanted to establish the “full circumstances” of the incident and whether there had been a prior relationship between the two men. What’s more, why did Ms Dines make the assumption that the complainant’s sexuality could point to a relationship with Mr Pincher? Would she have said this if a male MP had been accused of groping a female researcher?
While Ms Dines did report the incident to her superiors, showing that she did eventually take the matter seriously, her initial response gives a hint of why Mr Pincher has been allowed to continue in government jobs while facing a series of sexual harassment allegations over the past five years.
