Hosts Matt Lucas and Noel Fielding, and judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith began the 2022 series with a Star Wars skit
were palpable as they took their places behind their powder-blue benches for the first time. As is tradition, it was Cake Week, and the first challenge of the series was to create 12 identical mini sandwich cakes.
Simple, right? Not for the youngest baker, 18-year-old design student Maisam, whose sponge was crumbly, or for charity director Will, whose buttercream split not once, but twice. At the other end of the scale were Janusz, Sandro, Abdul and Syabira, though despite the fierce competition for teacher’s pet, Paul kept his Hollywood Handshake to himself.
The Technical Challenge was to bake my personal favourite, a ginormous six-layered red velvet cake with cream cheese icing. Some – Syabira, Sandro – were familiar with the recipe, others less so; 23-year-old Rebs had never made one before, despite starting her baking career at just three. Height was an issue for most of the bakers and James, Rebs and Maxy were the bottom three bakers. Once again Sandros and Syabira rose to the top, with the latter taking first place.
Finally, it was time for the show’s oddest challenge, the increasingly Willy Wonka-esque Showstopper. This week, the bakers had to create 3D replicas of their own home out of cake. The judges wanted solid structures with plenty of detail: pebble-dashed walls, wall-crawling ivy and all.
