OPINION: For Renner Auto’s version of the 1956 Porsche 356 Speedster, “every bit has to be better than the original”. But you’ll have to dig deep if you want one.

Really? $300,000-plus for a Porsche 356 Speedster that isn’t actually a Porsche 356 Speedster? It might sound slightly ridiculous, but Jason Ferraro would like to make the case.

“If you create a car like this,” says Ferraro, “every single bit of it has to be better than the original or, really, there’s no reason not to have an original. It isn’t a case of money, it’s a case of the performance, comfort, ease of use.” Renner would prefer clients stick to the palette of the day. The original Porsche 356 Speedster colour chart for the late 1950s included Aquamarine Blue , Silver Metallic, and Ivory. The car in the foreground is Stone Grey, a “special paint” introduced from 1957.
