The Sussex festival celebrates its 90th anniversary this year - and the unique experience can go a long way in showing that opera isn't just for the well-heeled? From soggy sandwiches to champagne and caviar, al fresco dining in all weathers is a national tradition.
Christie’s original theatre seated 300 people – a very small number that reflected the eliteness of such an experience. An early Glyndebourne pamphlet reassures visitors that “there is an excellent landing ground for aeroplanes 100 yards from the opera house” – for those who didn’t want to make the journey from London by train, or the south coast by bus.
Glyndebourne closed for two years during the Second World War when it became a refuge for city evacuees. In 1946 it premiered Britten’s new opera– and Christie funded its tour. But Britten spent more than twice the budget, and relations soured quickly . Britten cut ties with Glyndebourne – and after that, the festival took a break from performing new works, preferring instead to revert to what it knew best: Mozart.Yet, by the 60s, the mood was changing.
