UNDETERRED by political and bureaucratic challenges from his proposed reforms, International Labor Organization Director General Gilbert F. Houngbo continues to push for the modernization of the labor arm of the United Nations by making it more inclusive and responsive to the changing world of work.
“I think it is going to be difficult [to convince them], but I am not giving up hope on that,” the ILO chief said. The amendment will increase the number of members of the ILO Governing Body from 56 to 112 and also abolish the non-elective status or permanent membership of the 10 countries, which are of “chief industrial importance.”HOUNGBO also discussed his initiative to strengthen the Standards Review Mechanism Tripartite Working Group to update the conventions of ILO.
To help speed up the review process, he said he is considering making the TWG meet twice a year so more progress can be made.Houngbo also reported the strong reception to his campaign to create a Global Social Justice Coalition which will bring in international institutions, civil society groups and development partners, multinationals, academia and other stakeholders to protect labor rights.
“Being able to provide equal access to opportunities to every citizen particularly in the world of work is really crucial. So that objective and that vision has been kicked off,” Houngbo said. Houngbo concluded his first ever official visit to the Philippines on Wednesday.
