The Iloilo City Council on Monday declared a state of calamity due to water scarcity amid searing heat in some areas of the country.
In a statement, the local government said the declaration will allow Iloilo City to use a portion of its calamity fund amounting to P12.5 million for the procurement and delivery of water to all affected barangays.This includes barangays outside the assessment of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council , according to the LGU.State weather bureau PAGASA previously predicted that the heat index would rise to dangerous levels in Iloilo City and other parts of the country today.
PAGASA said the heat index may rise to 42°C for both Iloilo City and Dumangas, Iloilo.Heat index is the measure of the temperature that a person feels, which is different from the actual air temperature. It is computed by factoring in the humidity as well as the air temperature.Heat indexes that rise to dangerous levels may cause heat cramps and heat exhaustion, as well as heat stroke, for individuals exposed to continuous heat.
