Employers found liable could face fines of up to £45,000 per illegal worker
Two people have been arrested after Home Office immigration enforcement officers carried out raids at two businesses in Penwortham . Teams visited addresses on Liverpool Road on Tuesday following intelligence suggesting illegal working may be taking place.
As a result of the operation, two individuals were detained and one business was issued with a Civil Penalty Referral Notice. The notice does not mean a penalty has been imposed, but it allows the Home Office to begin a formal investigation into whether the employer has breached immigration employment rules. Officials will now assess the circumstances surrounding the case before deciding whether any further enforcement action is required.
The evidence will be reviewed by the Home Office Civil Penalty Compliance Team, which will determine whether a Civil Penalty Notice should be issued. Businesses are required by law to carry out checks to ensure employees have the right to work in the UK. Employers who fail to conduct the necessary checks and are found to have hired illegal workers can face significant financial penalties.
Under current regulations, a first breach can result in a fine of up to £45,000 for each illegal worker. For repeat offences, the maximum penalty rises to £60,000 per worker. No further details about the arrests have been released, while inquiries into the business served with the referral notice are continuing. A Home Office spokesperson said: "Illegal working undermines honest employers, undercuts local wages, and fuels organised immigration crime.
This government will not stand for it.
“Since coming into power, we have increased immigration enforcement action to the highest level in British history. This has delivered an 83% rise in illegal working arrests and 77% rise in raids.
