The city will explore the design and financial plausibilities of adding courts at either Sports Park or Veterans Park
Imperial Beach resident Bobby Bishop, 66, took on pickleball several years ago after tennis became too strenuous on his body. “I played tennis my whole life but now, at my age, it's more difficult to play on a regular basis physically, and also to be competitive,” he said. “Pickleball is, really, an easy sport for anyone to pick up.” There’s just one problem: his small, coastal city has no courts. There aren’t even tennis courts.
For example, the Palm Avenue site would only serve as a temporary location until the city develops it. Another area eyed at Veterans Park would remove more than one dozen parking spaces. The north turf site at Sports Park, on the other hand, would allow sufficient space to build a multi-use court that could double as a basketball court. Pickleball, an indoor or outdoor paddle sport that is a mashup of tennis, badminton and Ping-Pong, is one of the country’s fastest-growing sports.
