SARS-CoV-2 studies: Only neutralizing antibodies allow conclusions to be drawn about protection against new infections

Principle of cell-culture-based neutralization assays. Conventional virus-neutralization test and pseudovirus-neutralization test are laboratory methods primarily used for identifying whether neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 are present in the patient sample. Both tests involve incubating patient serum with the virus or pseudovirus , and then inoculating onto cell culture. If NAbs are present and the virus is neutralized, the cells will not be infected.

Control of SARS-CoV-2 infection by MT1-MMP-mediated shedding of ACE2 - Nature CommunicationsControl of SARS-CoV-2 infection by MT1-MMP-mediated shedding of ACE2 - Nature CommunicationsThe role of soluble angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (sACE2) in SARS-CoV-2 infection is not well understood. Here, authors show that membrane type 1 matrix metalloproteinase (MT1-MMP) releases sACE2 to promote SARS-CoV-2 cell entry in vitro and in vivo, and the upregulation of MT1-MMP may contribute to increased susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection in ageing.
