There has been 'an important step' made in relations between Canberra and Beijing as the Trade Minister met virtually with his Chinese counterpart for crucial talks.

Monday's virtual discussion follows on from Foreign Minister Penny Wong speaking with her counterpart in China in December and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese meeting with President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali in November.
