Arceneaux spoke with me about toning down his criticism without losing his voice, wading through devastating losses and finding the confidence to treat himself.What do Jordans symbolize culturally, and what do they reveal about society in terms of race and class? During the time you wrote this book, you lost friends to suicide and cancer, as well as your mother to cancer. How did grief change your original vision for this book?
It’s very old-fashioned of me, given that it might be illegal to be gay given the next election, but I think books are still one of the best ways I can connect to people with nuance. I don’t have to argue back and forth. The internet is not the method of how I want to reach folks.Publishing is a very lily-White space full of people with very elitist, classist, racist, sexist, homophobic views.
