Daylilies bloom all summer long, right up until the first frost. Their shimmering colours and varied shapes are a real eye-catcher in any flower bed. Invite them into your garden or tub and they'll thrive without a care in the world.
Daylilies, golden flowers Cousins of the lily, daylilies are bulbous perennials with many qualities. They flower prolifically and are very easy to grow, making them suitable for all gardeners... and virtually all gardens. They can even be grown in tubs, so you can grow them just about anywhere. However, their popular name could put off lovers of long-lasting flowers. Daylilies are nicknamed"day lilies" because each corolla lasts little more than a day.
The range of colours is astonishingly broad. Make no mistake, daylilies are not always golden yellow. From white to purple, they also come in pale yellow, salmon pink, bright orange, garnet and reddish brown. They're a real eye-catcher in any flower bed or pot! In contrast, several varieties have large corollas with almost oval petals, reminiscent of the imposing flowers of amaryllis. For example, 'nicolas de la thyle' has a sumptuous purplish-purple corolla with a yellow heart.
To top it all off, some varieties are fragrant! A fragrant daylily is a much-appreciated extra. Try 'almond puff', a pale salmon colour with a delicious honeysuckle fragrance.
