The hot jobs market will deliver Jim Chalmers a $3 billion windfall, with parts of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane recording rock-bottom rates of unemployment.
The number of Australians receiving unemployment benefits has fallen to a three-year low, delivering Treasurer Jim Chalmers a potential $3 billion windfall in the May budget.
The figure is the lowest since February 2020 and well below the peak reached in May 2020, when the pool of Australians on welfare exceeded 1.6 million as pandemic-related health orders forced businesses to shut their doors.The areas with the fewest people receiving unemployment benefits in February were in Sydney’s North Shore and Eastern Suburbs, including Ku-ring-gai , North Sydney/Mosman , Chatswood/Lane Cove , and Eastern Suburbs North , according toIn Melbourne, just 1.
The October budget was predicated on the unemployment rate increasing to 3.8 per cent by June. In February, joblessness fell to 3.5 per cent. In Melbourne, it is Tullamarine/Broadmeadows in the city’s north and in Brisbane, Beenleigh that have more people out of work than anywhere else.
