Nearly 1,000 aviators became America’s first African American military pilots who fought during World War II, also known as the Red Tails.
GULFPORT, Miss. - The inaugural, statewide Tuskegee Airmen Day celebration recognizes the legacy of service members.
Governor Tate Reeves signed House Bill 124 into law stating every fourth Thursday of March will be Tuskegee Airmen Day in Mississippi. In Gulfport, the Colonel Lawrence E. Roberts Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen held a ceremony for the proclamation.“Dad was a very quiet man. He was very committed, very determined, patriot, a trailblazer. A man of strength and honor,” said Dorothy Roberts, daughter of Colonel Lawrence E. Roberts.
“I think he would just be amazed with and honored for this type of recognition. He came from humble beginnings in Voxhaul New Jersey and rise through the ranks as Colonel during a time that was difficult, but he persevered, because he knew how to talk to people and bring people together. He knew how to live a life of service beyond himself. He was a man of service of this country. It’s an honor to be his daughter, and I’m blessed to be apart of the Roberts family,” she said.
Charles Bowers, member of the Lawrence E. Roberts Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen said, “They were finally allowed to get the training which took place in Tuskegee, Alabama. There at Moffet Field. that’s where they got the training. Eventually, 13 were in the first class and five graduated in the class of Commander Benjamin O. Davis Jr., who became a 4-Star General eventually. He led them throughout WWII.
