India and China top permanent migrant list with Sydney, Melbourne the popular choices

Almost 60 per cent of the three million permanent migrants since 2000 have settled in Sydney and Melbourne, with one-in-four new arrivals coming from India and China, recently released data shows.

The highest number of humanitarian visas were issued to those born in Iraq , followed by Afghanistan and Myanmar .

The figures also showed more than half of the permanent migrants - 59 per cent - have since become Australian citizens. The ABS further noted"permanent migrants born in South Africa were the most likely to be Australian citizens , the least likely were migrants born in China ". Next popular was the greater Perth area - 12.1 per cent of permanent migrants - followed by greater Brisbane and greater Adelaide . The most popular occupation for the 71 per cent employed permanent migrants was business, human resource and marketing professionals, then specialist managers, health professionals and carers and aides.
