The playing surface at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium has been heavily criticised following India's victory over Ireland
Holding the most-watched sporting fixture on the planet in New York was meant to be the headline act of a tournament that is being co-hosted by the West Indies and the US.But the headlines so far have not been complimentary and the risk is they could become even worse if Sunday’s big match turns into a farce.
The drop-in pitches that were made in Australia under the watchful eye of Adelaide Oval groundsman Damien Hough garnered much attention before the tournament, mainly because they were shipped to Florida, where further preparation took place, and then transported north in trucks to the Empire State. There have also been concerns over the slow, sandy outfield that many players believe is an injury risk.Yet it is the criticism of the surface – and two pitches have been used at the venue in the tournament so it’s not just one rogue drop-in – that has been brutal.wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “Shocking pitch. Trying to sell the game in the States is great .. love it .. but for players to have to play on this sub-standard surface in New York is unacceptable ..
