A new Indian restaurant, Indian Affair, has opened its doors in Ancoats. The sister site to the popular Chorlton eatery offers a modern take on classic dishes with a focus on street food snacks and beautiful presentation.
Walking into Indian Affair in Ancoats for the first time, I'm greeted with the comforting smell of incense mixed with a range of fresh herbs and flavours - and then I catch eyes with the diners at one of the nearby tables and see the impressive array of food they are attempting to make their way through.
Speaking about the food on the menu, Harshit said he wanted to come up with something that offered a feast for the senses. “For us, it’s not only about things tasting good,” he explains to me. “We know that people first eat with their eyes, so we wanted to create something that looks just as good as it tastes. And I think we have done that.” With a chuckle, he adds: “You will see for yourself.”
The palak chaat - a type of spinach fritter - looks absolutely stunning when arriving at the table too. Priced at £6, they are piled high and wedged in-between very generous layers of yoghurt, tamarind and mint chutney. Delicately light yet pack a welcome crispy crunch to proceedings that brings in the flavour, they are super moreish and another firm favourite of mine.
Last to arrive was the impressive Dilli Thali - a round platter full of taster portions of dishes, salads, and dessert. Opting for the vegetarian option at £20, it also comes in a vegan and meat variation. I was a bit apprehensive about the palak paneer - a type of Indian cottage cheese dish mixed with spinach puree - as I am not a fan of cottage cheese, but it was a lot nicer than I was expecting. Whilst I wouldn’t go as far as to order a whole portion of it again, it was nice in a smaller version and added to the mixture of tastes and flavours on offer with the platter.
