The second largest ethnic community in Pennsylvania could make the difference in electing one of their own to the White House

From left to right, Kinjal Patel, Ranak Patel and Travis Ballie volunteer for the Harris campaign’s ground operation in North Wales Pennsylvania campaign office, packed with volunteers enjoying a Diwali event in a state where the Indian American vote could be the difference in getting one of their own into the White House.. More than 70 per cent of those old enough to vote do so, and while this community makes up just 1.

Of course, the Vice President’s mother was from India, while she also has black heritage from her Jamaican father. But for the dozens of volunteers here in North Wales, they are unsurprisingly focussing on her maternal side of the family. “He has a plan to stop H-1B occupational visas and to stop family visas. Those are the two most common ways Indian Americans and South Asian Americans come to America.”

Travelling around many of the swing states, he realises his community’s vote is more important than ever. Sumitra Badrinathan, an assistant professor of political science and one of the researchers behind the survey, found that six in ten Indian American voters intend to vote for Harris, while just under a third are opting for Trump. Again, this is a slight increase in Trump’s vote share compared to four years ago.

Both Republicans and Democrats have felt the Indian American vote is up for grabs, and you see both parties trying to court them. “So, if you were a party or a campaign that’s trying to change the minds of those people or simply to mobilise them to get out to the polls and vote, then you would have to take this community’s preferences in to account, because that block is not a monolith.”Back at the Diwali celebrations Krish Ramanathan is cautiously optimistic.
