INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis City-County Councilor La Keisha Jackson was just chosen to fill a vacant seat in the Indiana Senate.
died in March, just two days after announcing she was stepping down from her position due to health concerns. She represented the east side of Indianapolis.Jackson will be sworn in once paperwork from Thursday's caucus is accepted by Senate leadership. Jackson said crime, food disparities, transportation gaps and economic development are some of the biggest issues facing Hoosiers.
"It's going to be a learning curve," Jackson said."I'm ready for the challenge. I'm ready to listen and talk to people and get out in the community. Going to some town halls, some meet-and-greets, and that's what I want to do to get to know my constituents in areas that I have not met yet."State Sen. Jean Breaux represents District 34, which includes the near east side of Indianapolis., which is now less than three weeks away.
As for Jackson's council seat, a yet-to-be-scheduled caucus in Marion County will name her replacement.
