Western executives play the green card in push for green nickel

An upshot of Indonesia's flooding of the nickel market with cheap metal is a renewed call for so-called ‘green' nickel to command premium prices.This is nothing new in itself - Australian mining tycoon Andrew Forrest has long called for nickel with a low carbon footprint and with solid ESG credentials to be priced differently.

Still, new initiatives are gaining some momentum. Fastmarkets has published a proposal to launch a low-carbon nickel briquette premium reflecting mounting pressure from the industry and politicians.Last year, nine US senators signed a letter opposing a proposed free-trade agreement to source critical minerals from Indonesia, citing environmental and safety concerns, reported the Wall Street Journal.
