Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos and British sailing legend Ben Ainslie have ended their partnership in the America's Cup race after failing to agree on future plans. Their joint venture aimed to bring the coveted trophy to Great Britain for the first time since its inception in 1851 but ultimately fell apart due to 'significant legal and practical obstacles'.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ben Ainslie teamed up in 2018 in a bid to win a first America's Cup for Great Britain had a strained relationship with Manchester United co-owner Ratcliffe regarding plans for the next America's Cup which prompted them to part ways.in a bid to a deliver a first win for Great Britain in the yacht race since it started in 1851.
Ineos said in a statement that they could "not find agreement" with Ainslie on "terms to move forward" after last year's event in Barcelona which wasAinslie's team said in response they were "astounded" by Ineos' future plans for the America's Cup and it "raises significant legal and practical obstacles for them".
Ainslie won medals at five consecutive Olympics from 1996 onwards, including gold at four consecutive Games from 2000 to 2012. Since winning gold at London 2012, Ainslie's goal has been to claim the America's Cup for Great Britain but all his attempts in a British boat, including those backed by Ineos, have ended in disappointment.
