Manchester United finally confirmed one of the worst kept secrets in football on Friday: Ruben Amorim will become the club's new manager.
It means he will take charge of Sporting's next three matches before joining United in the November international break, where he will get to work towards implementing the next stage of Ineos' plan at United. After a disastrous start to the season, Ten Hag was inevitably given his marching orders on Monday. He was never Ineos' man and his contract extension at the end of last season after a mediocre campaign always felt like a temporary fix before the new owners found the manager they felt would take the club to the next level.
They also feel Amorim's proven development of young talent at Sporting, as well as his style of play, is a big attraction and, crucially, United's chiefs feel believe his character will fit well within their structure. It is expected Amorim will bring his backroom staff with him from Sporting and the initial challenge will be to revive United's fortunes in the Premier League and Europa League.
