London was initially seen as the epicentre of the nation’s outbreak of Covid-19, but now could have nine times fewer cases if the lower end of the estimated 82-167 per million is accurate. The numbers meaning only the south west and south east, with 75- 140, have fewer cases than the capital. At the other end of the scale, Northern Ireland is close behind Wales, with 92 – 768 cases, followed by the North East and Yorkshire on 157-292, and the north west, on 141-289.The case numbers per million in different regions

It comes as the government eased restrictions yesterday despite concerns from experts that it could lead to a second wave of infections. Some children returned to classes yesterday as ‘shielders’ were told they could go outside for the first time in weeks and groups of up to six people were allowed to gather outside.
