Nazare, a loggerhead sea turtle found injured on a beach in Barrow-in-Furness, has been rehabilitated and flown to the Azores for release back into the wild.
A sea turtle that was found washed up in a Cumbria n beach earlier this year is getting a third chance at life.
Upon arrival at Sea Life Blackpool, it was found Nazare had been suffering with pneumonia and was burdened with a thick build-up of algae and seaweed that had been covering her shell. It was discovered she had been abandoned and after a rehabilitation period, Nazare was flown to the Azores and will be released back into the wild, the PA News Agency reports.When she was found, Nazare had a satellite tracking device on her shell and was also found to be microchipped.
A toothbrush was used to clean her shell and within days, the turtle began to show signs of improvement and was eating and moving independently. Once stabilised, Nazare was moved to Sea Life Scarborough for further rehabilitation. Once the team were happy Nazare was fit, healthy and ready to return to the wild, they even secured her a turtle passport to fly to the Azores. There, she was temporarily housed at Porto Pim aquarium in Portugal before being released back into the wild this month.
