Casa Familiar’s La Semilla Community Resiliency Center in San Ysidro will serve as shelter during extreme weather and offer sustainability programming.Casa Familiar, the San Ysidro-based community development organization, is embarking on a new mission: protecting some of South County’s most underserved residents from extreme weather.
The project involves turning a 7,000-square-foot vacant lot on West Park Avenue near Hall Avenue in San Ysidro into a five-site complex. “A lot of the housing or even community recs are old and not structured in a way that can be responsive to climate emergencies,” she said. “We don’t have spaces where, if there’s a strong heatwave, where do people go?”
