A coronial inquest into the death of Canberra man Andrew Seton, who was an experienced skier missing in the NSW Snowy Mountains, hears he 'ought to have been identified as a missing person'.
Andrew Seton died during a backcountry skiing excursion in the NSW Snowy Mountains in September 2022.An inquest into the death of a skier in the New South Wales Snowy Mountains has heard he should have been registered as a missing person when his mother alerted emergency services that he had not returned from a backcountry ski trip.
"The dreams and plans for our little family changed forever ," Mr Seton's mother Janice Seton told the inquest via audio-visual link on Thursday. "There are so many 'if onlys' and we have to live with that for the rest of our lives," Ms Seton said.NSW Missing Persons Registry manager Detective Inspector Ritchie Sim told the inquest that while he believed Mr Seton should have been registered as a missing person, he found the police investigation to be adequate.
The court heard the Seton family had five separate police officers asking them questions amid search efforts.Monaro Police District Commander John Klepczarek admitted to the court on Wednesday that local police did not communicate well enough with the family.The inquest heard that employing a family liaison officer — a singular main point of contact for families during police investigations — is now included in police standard operating procedure.
